Abby and Brittany Hensel are conjoined twins who continue to make medical history. Joined at the waist, they're two people from the belly button up, one from the hips down. They allowed the cameras into their lives when they were 11 and now, as they turn 16, once again share their unique way of life with us. We join the girls as they prepare for their drivers licence test and final years of school.
Please note, although they permitted the documentary crew to film them for a short time, Abby and Brittany prefer to live outside the limelight, therefore, there are no contact details for the twins and viewers are asked to respect their desire for privacy.
Conjoined twins are a rare event in the world's delivery rooms. They occur about once in every 50,000 births, but 40 percent are stillborn. Curiously, 70 percent of the world's conjoined twins are female.
Conjoined twins are always identical: the product of a single egg that for some unknown reason failed to divide fully into separate twins during the first three weeks of gestation. In the US there are perhaps 40 live cases each year; fully separated identical twins are 400 times more common.
Abigail and Brittany Hensel were born in 1990 to Mike and Patty Hensel of Minnesota in the USA.
They are one of four pairs of dicephalic twins (conjoined twins whose heads share a single body) known to have survived at any point in history. They were also born with a third vestigial arm, which was removed as it was useless, two hearts, and a third lung. They personally avoid the term Siamese twins. They consider themselves two individuals with one body, and not one girl with two heads.
Each twin controls only the leg and arm on her side of the body, yet they can ride a bike, tie shoes, swim and perform any action that requires that all limbs to be coordinated. They often anticipate what the other is thinking, or finish each other's sentences, but other identical twins report similar experiences.
The girls are happy, healthy and popular in their small town. Their parents encourage each girl's individual personality and their mother modifies their clothes, ensuring that all tops have two separate necks.
They developed scoliosis because of their conjoined spine and required surgery in 2002. At 13 they had braces put on their teeth, not at all an unusual experience for a couple of teenagers.
Mike and Patti Hensel have had two other children since the birth of the twins, both normal.
Abby and Brittany were the first conjoined twins in the state of Minnesota to receive their driver's licence. And how do they coordinate the task between them? Abby handles the pedals and the gearstick while Brittany is in charge of the lights and indicator. They both steer. |
